Lekki Toll Gate Reopen

Lagos State government has come out to affirm its stand on reopening the Lekki toll gate after months of shutdown

The Lagos State Government stated on Wednesday that reopening the Lekki tollgate was unavoidable because the Lekki Concession Company, which operates the tollgate, owes billions of naira to both local and foreign lenders and investors.

Gbenga Omotoso, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Wednesday that the LCC owes local lenders N11.6 billion and foreign lenders $31.1 million.

Despite opposition and protests from Lekki residents, the tollgate began operations in 2011, with the LCC charging users of the Lekki-Epe expressway a toll fee.

The tollgate, along with the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, were shut down following the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, which saw men from the Nigerian Army open fire on unarmed, flag-bearing protesters at the toll plaza.

On Monday, the LCC announced that tolling operations would resume on April 1.

In his statement, Omotoso said

“that the reopening of the Lekki tollgate is the result of engagement and encouragement from the area’s residents’ association, transporters, and traditional rulers, and that there will be “no resistance at all.”

lekki toll gate reopen will commence soon

“The first time that LCC went to the place, it wasn’t just to open the place and start collecting tolls; it was just for the company to go there and see what kind of damage was done to its equipment and how much damage could be repaired.” And not for them to go there and start tolling.
